What Is a Body Lift?
A body lift is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to improve the look of sagging skin by altering the underlying tissue. During the procedure, excess skin and fat are removed from around the patient’s body. The procedure can also improve the surface of the skin if dimpled or irregular in any way.
Body lifts can target the following areas:
People who have experienced significant fluctuations in weight, sun damage, pregnancy, or who have a genetic predisposition to poor tissue elasticity may experience sagging in the above areas. A body lift can help tighten and improve the appearance of these locations.
It should be noted that body lifts can’t remove excess fat. If your skin has good elasticity and you simply wish to remove pockets of fat, liposuction may work better for you. In the event you wish to both improve skin elasticity and remove excess fat, both a body lift and liposuction may be right for you. Dr. Hurst will discuss your options with you in detail, as well as the risks and challenges posed by each, to help you make the most informed dedication.
Is a Body Lift Right for You?
Candidates for body lifts come in all sizes and from all walks of life. In general, however, those who may wish to pursue a body lift include the following:
- Anyone with a significant amount of loose skin in one or more parts of the body,
- Healthy individuals without serious medical conditions and who don’t smoke, and
- People committed to a healthy lifestyle.
How Does a Body Lift Work?
During body lift surgery, extensive incisions are made around the area where the skin is to be removed. Prior to the procedure, Dr. Hurst will show you which areas will be altered so you know exactly what to expect. Fortunately, modern surgical techniques allow these cuts to be strategically located in places where they can be easily hidden.
You will meet your surgical team and anesthesiologist as you prepare for surgery. During this period, we will mark the surgical site(s) and administer anesthesia. You will be able to choose what type of sedation to undergo, such as intravenous sedation or general anesthesia.
Next, your surgeon will make an incision that resembles a bikini pattern to tighten whichever areas you’ve chosen—the groin, waist, thigh, buttock, and/or abdomen—in one procedure. This incision will allow Dr. Hurst to remove excess skin and fat so he can reposition and tighten the remaining tissue. As mentioned, this may be paired with liposuction to improve contour.
Closing the incision will require deep sutures within the underlying tissues to help form and support the newly shaped contours. Your surgeon may use skin adhesives, tapes, clips, or sutures to close the cut. Once that’s done, all you have to do is heal before you can enjoy the results of your body lift.
