Breast Procedures: Which One is Right For You?

Spring is just around the corner. That means warmer temperatures, less bulky clothing, and thinner, more form fitted tops. Now may be as good a time as ever to consider breast enhancement. A change in breast size, shape, or position can have a significant impact on one’s overall appearance and confidence. As women age, breasts often appear to droop or sag. Fortunately, breast surgery, one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures, can address and correct these unwanted changes.

Breast augmentation primarily increases breast size and improves shape. Implants are very safe and come in many different volumes, textures, and gels to help achieve one’s goals. Fat grafting is another option that can add volume to the breast in a more targeted fashion, allowing for improvement in breast shape without significant volume addition or the need for an implant.

There has been an exciting new development in the size of breast implants which is currently available to those who require more volume. FDA approved newly released Mentor Memory Gel Enhance breast implants now go up to 1445 ml. This is a significant breakthrough for women requiring additional breast size and volume. Since 2012, 800 ml breast implants were the largest silicone FDA approved option. Dr. Hurst is excited to have been the first plastic surgeon in the Southwest to have used these larger implants.

Breast reduction decreases size and improves position. Excess breast volume contributes to women feeling and looking “heavy”.  Large breasts can frequently lead to back, neck, and shoulder pain. Volume reduction and breast position can be adjusted to meet one’s objectives.

Mastopexy (breast lift) improves position with or without volume change. Many women are happy with their breast size but dissatisfied with how their breasts sag and droop when they remove their bra. Mastopexy not only elevates the nipple position, but also improves shape in the lower portion of the breast. Additional fat grafting or an implant can enhance upper pole shape and overall balance if desired.

A mommy makeover is a popular term that refers to concurrent breast and abdominal surgery. It usually consists of a single stage cosmetic procedure that involves breast augmentation with or without a breast lift and a tummy tuck. This surgery is tailored to address the physical changes that occur in these particular areas following pregnancy.

Should you wish to enhance, reduce, or simply touch up your breasts for medical or personal reasons, Dr. Hurst can assist you in selecting the correct breast procedure. He has been ranked by Newsweek as a top plastic surgeon for breast augmentation and is highly skilled in all areas of breast surgery.
